Hello everyone! Ready for some fun ukulele Pluckin’ and Strummin’?This year is flying by! We missed George Harrison’s birthday last meeting so we’ll play a song or two in his honor.

We didn’t have the 6 year Anniversary celebration that we were hoping to have. That doesn’t mean we won’t still celebrate this year. Please stayed tuned for information and thank you for your patience.

9:00 – 9:10 – Extra Help Lesson Session

We will do the early lesson session again before our meeting.

Last meeting it didn’t go as planned so we’ll make some changes.

My apologies. Outline below;

Extra Help Lesson Session

•Begin at 9:00am to 9:10

This ten minute window will give people time to get there and settled to get their ‘learn’ on.

•We will gather in a separate space depending on how many attend.

•Please have questions and materials ready. Specific questions work best because others will most likely benefit and once you have an answer you can work on it and check that off you list.

•If there are no specific questions we’ll pick a topic together and or work on arrangements which we’ll be playing in the second half of our meeting.

•Take notes if you’d like or record a short video or take a photo with your phone. This way you can review the material when you practice, practice, practice.

9:45 – Setup Time

Get your copies of our arrangements for round two. Schedule announcements with me for before or after the break. Prepare materials and tune up that ukulele. Song suggestions are always welcome.

10:00 – Round One – songs that mostly begin with the letter i.

Meeting Feb. 25th

Hello Pluckin’ Strummers! Our last meeting was really something else! A huge thank you to all that attended. Let’s do it again and see if we can fill the wonderful space we have to meet. Lots of new faces attended which was truly a pleasure. Hopefully you’ll return for more ukulele playin’ and singin’ fun.

Does anyone have a decent recording device? Video would be great but just audio would be good also. I think it would be fun and maybe helpful if we post videos or audio files online.

So I simply started selecting songs and sincerely got stuck searching for suitable sonets…. Lol!

Okay, you get it, right?

Songs that begin with the letter “S”! Super!

The choices have a few new ones which we haven’t dared try before but I figured we all paid for our books so we might as well play as many songs as possible.

Please remember to visit our pages on Facebook, Meetup and the PS website. All links are listed below for your clicking pleasure. Leave a comment or suggestion and don’t forget to ‘Like’ us on Facebook. There I finally said it. Lol!

Thank you to those that brought snacks. I forgot to bring the Girl Scout cookies I bought. Was there enough coffee? We’ll make more next time.

9:00 – We had a few members show up early for extra help with the song “Jealous Of The Moon” and then for some reason we didn’t play it in the second half. We will play it this time.

There will be another 45 minute help session starting at 9am for those wanting some extra attention. Bring your questions and I’ll do my best to help. This might become a regular thing if there’s enough interest.

Let me know.

9:45 – Setup – This is a good time to sign in, get copies of the arrangements for the second half, schedule announcements, tune up, ready your materials, and prepare to have a blast.

10:50’ish – Break Time

Please sign in if you haven’t already. Please include your email if you aren’t receiving our meeting announcements on the Sundays before our gatherings. Get some java and a snack and enjoy some good company. We have the coolest ukulele players in Los Angeles. Get to know someone new!

11:10’ish – Round Two

Are we having fun with our arrangements? Song suggestions are always welcome. We mixed it up a little last time with a few songs we haven’t played in a while and I thank Mike Mitchell for that suggestion. It worked out wonderfully. We’ll do it again this meeting starting with the ones we didn’t get to.

Jealous Of The Moon

Say Something – I took some time and revamped this arrangement and now it’s perfect!

Budapest – We haven’t done this great song in quite a while. I’m busy rewriting this so it’s not four pages long plus I’ve come up with a very cool and easy tap staccato chord rhythm that will sound awesome along with the more difficult hammer-on rhythm.

Longing To Belong

Angela – (My favorite at the moment)

I’m A Believer – This song is sounding really great with all the parts coming together nicely.

Sleep On The Floor – The Lumineers (New!)

City Of Stars – (New!)

Me And Julio – We really play this well!

In Spite Of Ourselves

Be My Lover – Alice Cooper! Rock out!
I can’t wait!
12:00 – Performance Time

The performances were so great last week I look forward to hearing more. Thank you all that participated.

What was that song that TJ played?

I need to learn that one!

12:25 – We must exit promptly because there is another function beginning at 12:30 and we can not interfere with their time. Thank you for being courteous. I apologize for cutting conversations short but they can continue out front.

*Someone left a suede “Jos. A. Banks” jacket at the “Eat” diner. I’ll bring it to the next meeting.

Meeting Feb. 11th

So tomorrow it will most likely be raining. I’ve been asked to come in early to give some extra help with the song “Jealous Of The Moon” and was planning on using the bench under the tree in front of the church but the weather is obviously not cooperating. Graciously, Bruce said that we are welcome to enter the space at 9am so I’ll be there just before nine to get a jump on some extra ukulele song instruction. Come join us!

Hello Pluckin’ Strummers! I’m so eager to meet with y’all this Saturday. The Superbowl is over and my team won! I’m from Massachusetts but I didn’t even know the Patriots were playing today until I turned on the tube. No time for football! I was working on music the entire day while the game was on in the background. I did take a Lady Gaga break. I think she was trying to channel Bowie in her performance. She got it done! Gutsy aerial maneuvers!

Come early on Saturday if you want some extra help with “Jealous Of The Moon”. I’ll be there at 9am to help at least one of our faithful members. If the church isn’t open by then we’ll hang by the bench under the tree in front. I hope it doesn’t rain! Lol!

Time to pick some songs!

Here comes Saturday! I always look forward to gathering with you all! Right this minute I’m sitting in a very nice hotel room after a long day of working in the rain. I brought two ukuleles and a bag full of music and I can’t think of a better way to spend the next couple hours than choosing next Saturday’s song list. I already played a dozen songs and forgot to start the list. Lol! Lost in music can be very relaxing. I hope the walls aren’t too thin! Lol!

11:10’ish – Round Two

Our arrangements!

Yes, there will be a new song from “The Lumineers”, “Sleep On The Floor”. Another great song! This will be the fifth I think!

Plus we will work on “Angela” again. I can’t wait to show you how to add percussion to the picking. So good!

Since we didn’t get to it last time we’ll revisit “Jealous Of The Moon”. I may have another new one ready also. We’ll also play “I’m A Believer” again making it sound even better. If you have the addition page showing the intro, riffs and strums please notice there’s one more riff that we haven’t done yet that kind of sounds a little like “Wipeout”. If you listen to the Monkees version of the song you’ll hear it.

Please recommend songs for us to play on FB, Meetup, our website or via email. Links listed below.

This is the most I ever wrote about our arrangements because an awesome club member asked me to include the songs we would be playing so they could practice. Love that!

12:00 – Performance Time

Get on up! Play us a tune.

Thanks to all the Pluckin’ Strummers club members that attended todays meeting. We had a fantastic time! The first half was so much fun as we played and sang many songs from one of the song books we use, The Daily Ukulele – Leap Year Edition.
The second half flew by with our arrangements. The highlight for me was the ability our members have to tackle a new song that I spring upon them. This isn’t a song that they’ve heard before, well maybe, but it’s a new song from a recently released album by one of my favorite artists, The Lumineers. This song isn’t the easiest to play due to my insistence of playing the song in it’s original key. To me it just sounds the best this way plus you can play along with the recording to help learn the song without using a capo. The song, “Angela” has a beautiful melody and truly great lyrics. Simply genius!
The chords they tackled were B, F#m, E, C#m, and G#m. I’m aware that if the key was raised a half step to C that it would be easier but easier doesn’t make better players. As suggested some played the song with 2nd position B and F#m chords which better matched the descending voicings of the guitars playing the original. When playing the 2nd position B, 8676, you can alternate between the normally doubled 3rd of the chord, the eb, or the higher doubled 5th of the chord, the f#. With the f# it would be 8679 which would have to be fretted by barring the chord. TMI? Lol! Sorry.
As I said during the meeting, because we are an ukulele group without percussion or other instruments, like piano, that it’s necessary that the song be also strummed along with the picking which gives the song a fuller sound. You all did great job with the simple strum that didn’t overwhelm but enhanced the picking. Bravo to all. I look forward to playing this song again at our next meeting and introducing yet another Lumineers tune. Although it may seen so, we aren’t becoming a Lumineers tribute band. Lol!
Most importantly, whoever brought the cookies that tasted like fruitcake should be commended. Yummy! Thanks to all that brought snacks. See you on the 28th!
